The project

A retreat and creative residency dedicated to writing and the visual arts.

Le Four à Pain is a unique residency space devoted to literary, photographic, and visual creation, located in a village on the Causse Méjean plateau, in the heart of a raw and inspiring natural landscape. Driven by the desire to offer artists and writers a suspended time for work, chosen solitude, and immersion in a powerful rural environment, Le Four à Painoffers residency grants funded by patrons and partner foundations.

The residency welcomes two main creative fields:

  • Writing, in all its diversity: authors, playwrights, translators, screenwriters, philosophers, historians, lyricists any discipline placing written language at the core of the project.

  • Visual and Plastic Arts: photography, video, drawing, sculpture, painting, graphic design, and more for artists wishing to develop, continue, or complete a work in connection with a time of retreat.

Conceived as a creative refuge, the residency is also a space for connection, where artists may if they wish engage with local residents, landscapes, and activities. A shared vegetable garden is available, and the rhythm of the seasons naturally shapes the creative process.

By offering this rare setting, Le Four à Pain affirms a deep belief: that creation is nourished as much by silence as by exchange, by labor as by wandering, by inner matter as by inhabited territories.

This year, support from the Francis Kurkdjian Endowment Fund will enable the residencies of three artists: Annie Kurkdjian (Armenian painter and poet), Christophe Dabitch (Belgian graphic novelist), Violaine Schwartz (French actress and singer).
