With Les Voix de Carmen, Daniel San Pedro and Compagnie des Petits Champs offer a bold reinvention of a landmark of literary and musical heritage. Drawing on the mythical figure of Carmen, the project creates a multidisciplinary work in which theatre, singing, music, film and dance come together within a shared space for exploration and performance.

On a film set, a director, played by Estelle Meyer, is preparing a film about Carmen, portrayed by Camélia Jordana. Rather than recreating the entire romantic narrative described by Mérimée, with its landscapes, exotic settings and chases across Spain, she chooses to return to the essentials: the voices, bodies, desires, contradictions and forces that shape this figure who has become a legend.

Within this enclosed and vibrant space, transformed into a living laboratory, the director brings together a small team of three women and two men: two actor-singers, Camélia Jordana and Sofia Faidi; an actor-singer, Gabriel Dahmani; a choreographer, Ruben Molina; and a director of photography, Micaela Albanese. She tells them the story, shares her vision and offers her interpretation of the characters. Gradually, through rehearsals, improvisations, camera experiments and confrontation, the figure of Carmen emerges.

Les Voix de Carmen does not simply seek to adapt a celebrated work, but to explore what it continues to make us hear today. The project examines Carmen’s many faces: a free woman, an object of desire, a character defined by the gaze of others, but also an elusive voice, always in motion. By relocating the story to a film set, the production questions the making of myths, the representation of women and the ways in which works of cultural heritage can be reactivated through contemporary forms of artistic expression.

From January 2027: performances and a nationwide tour.

It contributes to bringing a work to new audiences, where voices, bodies and images reinvent Carmen for our time.
